Collier Schorr

I didn’t personally connect with Collier Schorr’s subject matter. I found it a bit confusing why an old woman was photographing young wrestling boys. Not one of my favorite photographers throughout this semester.

Book Project: Surf/Beach

Posted in Uncategorized by jamesabishop on October 20, 2009

In my final project I will be focusing on surf/beach genre photography. Having the luxury of living in Carlsbad. It’s only natural to photograph what I enjoy doing most….being a beachbum. My goal is to capture images around Terra Mar; a surf spot, images which have nothing to do with brands, images with a natural aesthetic feel, people who have a natural flow of body movements, surfers. Terra Mar is located near the Carlsbad Power Plant (North Carlsbad) alongside Highway 101. The beach is “private property” of the beach houses located directly on the shore, allowing it to be somewhat hard to reach and visually hidden from tourists. The surf scene is mainly composed of older longboarders, but like any beach people of all styles and ages can be found. The surf is known for longboarding on the gentle reef break which create line, normally nothing too chaotic.

I enjoy black and white images and will probably continue to convert to black and white. The images I have already posted are the beginning of my final project.

James Nachtwey

Posted in Uncategorized by jamesabishop on October 7, 2009

James Nachtwey takes some very graphic photographs. I enjoyed a lot of his black and white images, although some were very saddening. I think Nachtweys photos told very important stories which portrayed the truth. You can write all you want about terrible tragedies in third world countries but nothing conveys the truth like a picture.

Roni Horn

Posted in Uncategorized by jamesabishop on October 6, 2009

I thought Roni Horn was a good photographer but not a favorite. Her images were simple but her ideas were good. She gets great enjoyment out of placing her images in a room which I thought was done very well. I enjoyed her water pieces because I am always around water bodies. She talked about metaphors a lot which I agreed.

Brandenburg

Jim Brandenburg shot one picture a day for 90 days straight. This was a personal project where he was only shooting for himself. Suprisingly the photos sat in his drawer for two years until National Geographic decided to publish them. As they were published, they were used to convince congress to not pass a bill and instead protect and preserve hundreds of acres in southwest Minnesota. Jim’s personal project ended up saving his homeland without even realizing it.
